April Fools’ Day, a celebrated in many countries on April 1st, is a day when people play practical jokes, tell tall tales, and come up with various pranks. The holiday likely originated in France. In 1564, King Charles IX reformed the calendar, moving the start of the year from April 1st to January 1st. Not everyone immediately accepted this change, and those who continued to celebrate the New Year on the old date became the target of jokes. This is where the name „April Fools’ Day” comes from.
In medieval Europe, the New Year was celebrated on March 25th, the Feast of the Annunciation. It wasn’t until 1582 that Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar, which set January 1st as the start of the New Year. However, France adopted this change earlier, in 1564.
In various regions of France, the New Year was celebrated on different dates, which is why King Charles IX wanted to standardize it. The situation was similar in other European countries, where not everyone immediately accepted the new calendar.
It is not entirely certain whether this change in France was the origin of the April Fools’ Day tradition. There is also a theory that the custom has roots in ancient Roman practices.
