The German crimes committed during these battles reached an unimaginable level of brutality, becoming one of the darkest chapters of World War II.

Historical Context and Genesis of the Uprising

The Warsaw Ghetto, established by the Germans in 1940, was the largest Jewish ghetto in occupied Europe. At its peak, it housed approximately 460,000 people, crammed into a small area of only 3.14 km². Living conditions in the ghetto were catastrophic – hunger, disease, and German repressions decimated the population.

A key moment was the so-called Grossaktion Warsaw, which began on July 22, 1942, during which about 300,000 Jews were deported to the Treblinka extermination camp. In response to these events, armed organizations were formed in the ghetto – the Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB) under the command of Mordechaj Anielewicz and the Jewish Military Union (ŻZW).

German Crimes During the Uprising

1. Deliberate Burning of the Ghetto and Mass Murder

Heinrich Himmler, the head of the SS, issued an order for the complete destruction of the ghetto and the extermination of its inhabitants. On April 23, 1943, Jürgen Stroop, the new commander of the German forces suppressing the uprising, ordered the systematic burning of the entire district. In his report, Stroop wrote: „I then decided to completely destroy the Jewish residential district by burning down all residential blocks.”

The Germans used flamethrowers and incendiary materials to drive the hiding Jews out of bunkers and shelters. As survivor Marian Berland recounted: „People tried their last to save themselves, to prolong their lives even for a moment. They stormed the exits several more times, but in vain. Waves of gas threw them back.”

2. Gassing of Bunkers and Mass Executions

The Germans used various methods of extermination, including gassing bunkers. Witness Marian Berland described: „A sweet, suffocating gas began to spread through the room. Hell broke loose.” After forcing people out of the bunkers, the Germans often shot them on the spot or sent them to extermination camps.

According to Stroop’s report, at least 56,065 Jews were killed or captured during the uprising. German losses, according to the same report, amounted to only 16 killed and 90 wounded, which was most likely a significant underestimation.

3. Cruelty of Soldiers and Police Formations

To suppress the uprising, the Germans deployed SS units, police, and the so-called Trawnikimänner – guards mainly of Ukrainian origin. Their behavior exceeded all imagination of human cruelty. Berland recalled: „The officer laughs, satisfied, thanking for the good execution of the task. Soldiers joyfully pat each other on the back. […] What kind of people are these? They are beasts dressed in human clothes.”

German soldiers not only murdered but also robbed their victims and humiliated them before death. Berland reported: „They ordered the Jews to hand over all valuables and currency. The terrified crowd obediently filled a bucket and a helmet with them.”

4. Liquidation of Hospitals and Welfare Institutions

The Germans did not spare even the sick and children. During the uprising, all hospitals and care homes in the ghetto were liquidated. A symbolic event was the murder of Janusz Korczak and his charges from the Orphanage, who had been deported to Treblinka during an earlier liquidation action.

5. Systematic Destruction of the Jewish Quarter

After suppressing the uprising, the Germans continued their work of destruction. On May 16, 1943, as a sign of „victory,” they blew up the Great Synagogue on Tłomackie Street. Stroop could then report to Himmler: „The Jewish quarter in Warsaw no longer exists!”

Perpetrators of the Crimes

The main individuals responsible for the crimes were:

Jürgen Stroop – SS-Brigadeführer, who personally supervised the suppression of the uprising and prepared a detailed report on its liquidation.

Ferdinand von Sammern-Frankenegg – the initial commander of the operation, responsible for earlier deportations.

Units of the SS, police, and collaborationist formations composed of Ukrainians (Trawnikimänner).

Stroop, who was tried and executed in Warsaw in 1952 after the war, attempted in his testimony to downplay the scale of the crimes, claiming that his units acted „according to the law.”

Summary

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the accompanying German crimes represent one of the most shocking examples of Nazi genocide. Despite the heroic resistance of a few hundred poorly armed fighters, the Germans cold-bloodedly murdered tens of thousands of people, systematically destroying the entire district. These events remain an eternal testament to both German cruelty and Jewish courage in the face of annihilation.

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was a heroic, though doomed, act of resistance by Jewish fighters against their Nazi oppressors.
