This tragic event, unfolding on Polish soil, is a testament to both German barbarity and the unwavering will to fight for survival, as well as the solidarity of a part of Polish society.

Causes of the Uprising and the Determination of the Fighters:

The direct cause of the uprising was the German decision to liquidate the Warsaw Ghetto completely, following the mass deportations to the Treblinka extermination camp in the summer of 1942. The Jews who remained in the ghetto lived under the shadow of death and with the full awareness of their impending end.

In this hopeless situation, a resistance movement was born, represented by the Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB) and the Jewish Military Union (ŻZW). Their aim was not military victory, which was unrealistic against the might of the German army, but to inflict as many losses on the enemy as possible and to salvage the remnants of human dignity through active resistance. Young fighters, often without military experience and with minimal weaponry, undertook an unequal struggle.

The Course of the Uprising and German Atrocities:

On April 19, 1943, German troops entered the ghetto to complete its liquidation. They were met with surprising and fierce resistance from the Jewish insurgents. Street fighting broke out, and the insurgents defended themselves from bunkers and prepared hiding places.

The uprising lasted for 27 days. The Germans, under the command of SS-Brigadeführer Jürgen Stroop, brutally pacified the ghetto, systematically destroying buildings using artillery and flamethrowers. Stroop’s documentation testifies to the cruelty and determination to crush all resistance.

On the Jewish side, fighters of the ŻOB, led by Mordechaj Anielewicz, and the ŻZW, headed by Paweł Frenkel, fought. Despite initial difficulties in coordination, both organizations jointly confronted the German aggressor. Many civilian residents of the ghetto supported the insurgents by building barricades, providing necessary supplies, and caring for the wounded.

Help from the Polish Resistance Movement and Civilians:

It is worth emphasizing that the insurgents in the Warsaw Ghetto were not isolated. The Polish resistance movement, including the Home Army (AK) and other organizations, made attempts to assist the fighting Jews. Poles delivered weapons, ammunition, and medicine to the ghetto, although to a limited extent due to the enormous risk and logistical difficulties.

Soldiers of the AK carried out diversionary actions near the ghetto walls, aimed at diverting some of the German forces. There are also known cases of Polish civilians providing shelter to Jews escaping from the ghetto, which carried the enormous danger of the death penalty from the German occupiers.

Jan Karski, a courier of the Polish Underground State, conveyed reports about the situation in the ghetto and the Holocaust to the world. Irena Sendlerowa and her associates organized a network of people who, at the risk of their lives, smuggled hundreds of Jewish children out of the ghetto and hid them. These and other acts of help, although often insufficient in the face of the scale of German crimes, testify to the courage and humanity of many Poles.

Consequences of the Uprising and Remembrance:

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising ended in a tragic defeat for the insurgents. The Germans razed the ghetto to the ground, and the surviving residents were murdered or deported to extermination camps. However, this act of heroic resistance became a symbol of Jewish martyrdom and the fight for dignity in the face of the Holocaust.

Remembrance of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the courage of the Jewish fighters, and the help of Poles who risked their lives is extremely important for preserving historical truth. It recalls the cruelty of German Nazism, the tragedy of the Holocaust, and those who, in the darkest of times, were able to maintain humanity and solidarity. It is a lasting legacy that obliges us to remember and to oppose all forms of hatred and intolerance.

Oczywiście, oto tłumaczenie na język angielski artykułu o Powstaniu w Getcie Warszawskim: The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising: The Heroism of Jews and the Help of Poles in the Face of German Cruelty The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which erupted on April 19,…

[10,340

post-1305","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog","category-historia
["GET
